During a stage of practice-based research for my PhD investigation, I firstly developed an audio-visual environmental installation, A-Wakening, which was exhibited in January 2018. This work was created as a response to the active and immersive relationship between audience and artwork.
Prior to the realisation of this work, I undertook four experimental stages, exploring form, colour, layering, light and process:
Prior to the realisation of this work, I undertook four experimental stages, exploring form, colour, layering, light and process:
1
Developing a series of artistic responses to the initial composition selecting choosing the colours and shapes, and combining them in a pastel sketch.
2
Creating ‘mock ups’ of different techniques that could be used in a larger scale.
3
Creating an animation reflecting the tone and movement of the composition.

Building on my earlier work in the virtual environment Second Life, I here considered the environment as a contemporary space for creation and performance embraced by artists and composers. I recreated (or reimagine) a virtual version of the above work as The Lull, which formed part of a three-month project in Second Life, and was made possible by the Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) Core Sim Grant Scheme. While A-Wakening was set in non-traditional physical venue – that of a black box theatre space open to the audience, The Lull references this investigation positioning of the virtual as a contemporary non-traditional performance space.
